Horace is a friend who graciously accepted my offer to sit for a session.  In a twist to my regular M.O. I wanted to use the sitter as a model, acting out

my own specific ideas, rather than trying to have them express their own personality for the camera.  While I wasn’t stretching Horace too far, I feel

that I made a successful debut as a director.  I’d long thought he would make an excellent subject as he has loads of natural charisma and a distinctive look

to boot.  I was going for high texture, dramatic light and highly expressive poses.  I saw Horace as a spiritual traveler, looking inward to find his path.  We

used our shared experience with yoga to start with basic poses and then extend them into movements.  Some poses worked best as static moments while

others were done as I directed him to hit his marks through a sequence of movements as I tracked him through the lens.  As the Brits say, I’m well chuffed at

the results and I’m anxious to hear what others think.  Comments are welcome!  On a personal note, I’d like to thank Horace for his participation and

willingness to work with me.  Good luck and good health as your journey continues.

You might not think so, but winter light can be very flattering.  This was taken in the late afternoon about an hour before sunset

when the light was nice and warm and just a little diffused from the grey winter sky.  Profile shots with rim lighting from that orange/red

light as the sun just starts to set have a great dramatic tone as well.  Don’t think you have to have bright summer sun to get good color, use

the light you have and try to take advantage of it.

I did my usual B&W conversions and like them of course, but I think I really like the warm tone to these even better.  I started with a coppery crosstone and refined it a little until I got the right look.  I think it’s very flattering and you can look for more of it in the future : )

Part 2 will be the cooler, more classic B&W looks and then come the film shots.

The girls modeled their new cheongsam dresses they got for the second night of Hannukah.  I had to chase them all over Hell and Gone to get them to sit still for even a second and get a shot snapped off.  Ava howled like a dog when we had to peel the dress off at bedtime and get her into her pajamas.  Instant new favorite dress.

Canon 5D + Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8 L

I’ll be sorting through and picking my favorites but I thought this was a nice start.  As expected, the 5D really shines for portraits and I only wish I could spring for a full set of mono lights and triggers.  Simplicity does have it’s virtues and you can do a lot with natural light and a single speedlight for a little fill.
